Where I ate in College Station, Texas!
Working remotely has its perks, such as having the time to make breakfast in the morning or being able to go to the gym during my lunch break. But, I have an interesting role where I am a videographer for a nonprofit organization, so I do have to travel a few times a year. Last month, I traveled to College Station, Texas for a content shoot that I organized with some members and it was great! But, that also meant I was able to try some Southern/Midwestern novelties and actually get chips and white queso at a restaurant. Here’s everything I ate in College Station over two days minus my Cava bowl and hotel breakfasts.
Whataburger
Do you know what it’s like to be 9 months pregnant and all you want is the avocado bacon burger and spicy ketchup from Whataburger? I do and unfortunately the only Whataburger near me is South Carolina (I think). So, not easy to do. And I think most of Texas might agree with me here, but Whataburger > In and Out. Of course, I got my burger and fries (& a large diet Dr. Pepper from the fountain which is elite). But, if you ever find yourself at Whataburger in the moring, a honey butter chicken biscuit is a must. And even better, if you have a road trip coming up in the South, Whataburger is generally 24 hours.
Lucky Goat Coffee
Lucky Goat got me through college. I’m not lying. A Tallahassee staple and their coffee truly is iconic. I enjoyed their brown sugar cold foam cold brew and it was the perfect amount of sweet. Plus, it was the perfect pick me up in the Texas heat. Seeing all the college students in there studying truly made me miss my friends and our study dates almost ten years ago— yikes!
Juanita’s Tex Mex Cantina
I think you have to get Tex Mex when you’re in Texas. I literally don’t think there is anyway around it. And something I miss is getting a nice, large margarita and chips and white queso. I literally think I live in a white queso desert. Does anyone know of somewhere I can get plain white queso at a restaurant AND a margarita in South Jersey? Anyways, tacos, white queso and tequila are the key to my heart and this meal truly made me happy. I think every college town needs a margarita spot. To be honest, the appetizers were better than the entrees. But, if you’re looking for a cheap meal and somwhere to socialize with colleagues or friends, this place won’t disappoint.
Canteen Bar & Grill
You should know that getting to College Station is not easy. It was about an eight hour travel day for me from Philadelphia. Only American Airlines flies into College Station from Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), so there are only a handful of flights each day. After a full day in the air and in airports, my coworker and I stumbled into Canteen Bar & Grill. The best way I can describe it is elevated bar food. And it was actually really good. Being in the land of fried food, I obviously had to get their fried pickle and cauliflower appetizer. But, to be balanced, I ordered their signature salad with crisp apples, bleu cheese and buffalo chicken tenders on top. Also, going here at the height of March Madness, this was place was popping. And it has a pool— if you can figure out how to get into the pool, let a girl know. And if you want to enjoy a beverage, their signature purple margarita was great.
To be honest, I don’t know if I’ll ever return to College Station. But, there are two things I know for sure: it has a great meteorology department and they have a decent food scene.
